The Olof Palme Center for Analysis and Research on Peace, Security, and Development, A.C., announces the publication of the book The Geopolitics of Wine by María Cristina Rosas, a work that traces the role of wine, beer, spirits, and other fermented beverages throughout world history—in wars of conquest, celebrations, defeats, and negotiations. It also analyzes gastrodiplomacy and enodiplomacy as components of cultural diplomacy, as well as the political economy of wine, including its use as countries’ preferred tool for sanctioning their counterparts. The book also explains the characteristics of wine from the United States, the People’s Republic of China, Russia, and Mexico, reviewing the sector, its importance as a source of revenue for the public treasury through taxes, and the implications of alcohol consumption for public health.
