The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) entered into force on January 1st, 1994. Agreed to 15 years to liberalize trade and promote investment between Mexico, the United States and Canada, it has been an instrument that fostered interdependence between the three countries in different extents and levels. It was also a watershed at a time when the Uruguay Round of the then General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) got stalled. After NAFTA, various trade agreements were based on its structure to include matters beyond ’tariff disarmament.’ Once a 'rookie'/'newbie', today Mexico is an obligatory reference in the management of commercial negotiations in the world.
Once the three decades for which NAFTA was agreed had elapsed, it was necessary to make an evaluation of it, especially since the arrival of Donald Trump to the presidency of the United States. For this reason, in this book, "The North American Free Trade Agreement 2.0", the authors focus on analyzing what was achieved or not during NAFTA, and the directions that rethinking this agreement could face in the world of the 21st century, without losing sight of the crisis of multilateralism and the challenges posed by the stalemate in the Doha Round of the World Trade Organization (WTO). This is a book that invites upon reflection on a transcendent issue for the present and the future of Mexico.
